Buffalo Links
Check out a few images of Buffalo, to be filled in throughout the winter and spring.
Over the course of the coming year, this page will be filled out with links to Buffalo: to its history, its architecture, its culture, and in particular its Irish history. This will develop slowly over time, but here are some initial and important links for starters.
Buffalo's Irish culture, history, and organization can be found at www.BuffaloIrish.com, created and maintained by The Shannon Pub. Check it regularly because it is a changing panorama of events.
Similarly, you'll want to keep up with Buffalo Bloomsday as it develops over the year. Since it will be integrated into the conference, you'll want to keep up with it.
In November, the New York Times did a fine article on Buffalo architecture. The city is indeed an architectural museum, and the article will get you started. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/16/arts/design/16ouro.html?_r=1
The article was accompanied by a slide show of some architectural highlights. Check it out at http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2008/11/16/arts/20081116_OURO_SLIDESHOW_index.html
On June 14 and June 16, tours are being arranged for partners, friends, and interested conference goers of Buffalo's architectural history and millionaire's row. Possibly, if there is interest, to the Darwin Martin House, the Frank Lloyd Wright house that is presently being restored.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Buffalo legacy in Buffalo is considerable. Here is some of it: http://www.wrightnowinbuffalo.com/?gclid=CI_d2OKXkZcCFQJNagodVBtK_Q
There are many ways to keep track of what is going on in Buffalo and find out about out-of-way places to eat, try the on-line journal Buffalo Rising. Check it often, since things change on a regular basis.
Another listening post, more pugnacious and political than Buffalo Rising is Artvoice, where some of the ongoing disputes are monitored in detail. But true to its name, Artvoice is very much an arts paper.
Dining in Buffalo
The best guide to dining in Buffalo is a blog kept by UB Professor Bill Rapaport for over twenty years. It is participant based and reasonably reliable. Here is the Rapaport report in its long form. http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/restaurant.guide/
Check the pages for downtown and the west side for the Buffalo State area. They are a bit too capacious and not everything is walking distance. But it is a start.
And here is a story about the Rapaport Report.
