Michael Rose

Congratulations to Michael Rose for placing second in a national writing competition!

Michael Rose has won a national distinction, having been named one of four runners-up in the prestigious essay competition, the 2007 Norton Scholar’s Prize. Rose, an undergraduate at UB majoring both in English and in Film Studies, won this honor for his essay, “Chaucer’s Reading of Petrarch: A Dialogic Criticism.” Rose’s essay uses the Clerk’s avoidance of declaring Boccaccio as his actual source as a launching pad for a discussion of class- and gender conflicts at the heart of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Rose’s essay offers nuanced readings both of the The Clerk’s Tale and of the socio-cultural background shared by Chaucer, the Clerk, and his dual (and dueling) sources, Boccaccio and Petrarch. Showing a keen sense of the history of criticism of Chaucer, Rose provides in his essay a fresh perspective powerful enough to gain his own critical acclaim. Kudos to Michael Rose.

A special congratulations to the graduates of our class of 2007!
